Work as a Medical Doctor in Maldives:the application process

Having spent two years living and working in Maldives, I often get asked by my friends/ colleagues about the necessary steps to undertake in-order to work as a Doctor in Maldives. It’s been over two years I left Maldives but the application process remains the same.

Applying to work in Maldives is straight foward  Usually an Agent handles and guides you through the entire Application process. It is mandatory to have passed IELTS and completed one year of horsemanship. Maldives Ministry of health tends to employ people with 3-5 years experience.

Step 1 : Eligibility Check

First you will be made to check the list of Eligible Medical Schools accepted by the Medical and Dental Council of Maldives(MMDC)

http://mmc.gov.mv/information/list-of-medical-institute/

However in recent times, due to the impact of Covid and increased work pressure Doctors are getting employed without their schools being listed.

Step 2 : Filling of Application forms and submission of Relevant Documents

After confirming your school is listed; a verbal agreement is made with Agent; they will handle your entire application on the condition that on arrival to Maldives you pay a sum of $1800-$2000. Sometimes Applicants are dealing with middlemen and these middleman add extra fees inorder to make profit so the Agency fee ends up way higher than expected.

After an agreement is made with Agent; Several application forms are sent to the applicant to fill. The Agent also requests for documents such as University Certificate, Transcript, Internship forms, full registration, Annual license, IELTS certificate, CV, Experience Certificate.

Step 3: Interview

On successful filing of forms and giving all required documents; applicants are invited to an interview which is usually conducted by Consultants working with MMDC (Maldives Medical and Dental Council).

Questions asked in the interview are not difficult and in most cases once the Applicant is confident enough; they usually pass the interview.

Step 4: Interview outcome and Submission of Additional Documents

The agents will tell Applicants if their interviews turned out successful or not. I was told by my agent I was successful at my interview and she requested for COGS(Certificate of good standing) from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN). This was the hardest part of the entire process; but after 1-2 weeks I got my COGS and forwarded it to my agent. Also my agent requested for Police report from Nigeria

Step 5 Contract signing and Departure

I got my offer letter, signed the contract and I was asked to buy my flight ticket and I was given a short time duration report to work (within a week). However; I was not ready at this point so I spoke to my agent and pushed my resumption further. After purchasing my flight ticket, I forwarded my flight details to my agent.

Step 6 Arrival to Maldives

I arrived maldives and my Agent was at Velena Airport Male to pick me up. Finally I met her for the first time and she took me to my hotel room.

Applying to work in Maldives is a straight forward process, if you have any questions/queries, please drop them down below.

Cheers!
